Recipe Notes:

  • In place of rosemary, you can use any type of fresh or fake greenery that resembles pine tree branches.
  • The length of the board used should be AT LEAST 12 inches (not including the length of the handle) otherwise you will end up with a short, stubby tree.
  • Get kids involves in making this fun board! They will love and it is a great way to build memories.

How do I decide how much food I need for my appetizer board?

A good rule of thumb is to aim for at least 2 ounces of cheese per person. If you expect hungrier guests, you can always buffer for more or offer filling additions like meats or nuts to your board.

Can I prepare this board ahead of time?

Absolutely! As long as you wrap the board with plastic wrap or place it in a large airtight container you can prepare this festive board at least 1-2 days prior to serving. Be sure it is properly wrapped to prevent the cubed cheese from dying out.

How do I know how big of a board to use?

I used a board that is 12-inches long (not including the length of the handle). This will feed about 6 people, assuming that it is only part of the offerings at your get-together. For more people, use a larger board. For an extensive spread, you can draw the outline of a tree on butcher paper and fill it in with your favorite charcuterie items, separating rows with sprigs of rosemary to create ‘tree branches’.

Ingredient quantities are based on what I used; however, you may use more or less depending on the size of your board and how many people you plan to serve.

  1. Start by selecting a board to use. The best board will be rectangular with minimum dimensions of 5 inches x 12 inches and should have a handle.
  2. Place two sprigs of rosemary together at the top of the board creating the ‘tree top’. Repeat this moving down the board leaving 2-3 inches of space between each row. My 12-inch board had 4 rows. herb sprigs put on board
  3. Cut your cheese into about ½ inch cubes. Fill 2-3 inches of the handle of the board with cubed cheese to create the ‘tree trunk’. At the top of the ‘trunk’ there should be two sprigs of rosemary to separate it from the next row.
  4. Moving up from the ‘tree trunk’ use grapes to fill in the next row between the rosemary sprigs. Continue to alternate between cheese and grapes until you reach the top.cheese and grapes added to board
  5. Cut a star out of a ½ -inch thick rectangle of yellow cheese. Insert a toothpick halfway into the bottom center of the star. With the other half of the toothpick, spear a grape and place the star at the top of the tree where the rosemary springs meet.cheese star and grape on toothpick
  6. Decorate the tree with several blueberries and raspberries.Festive Christmas Tree Cheese Board
  7. Serve immediately with toothpicks or wrap in plastic wrap and store in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.
